Common Orthodontic Emergencies
If you have been suffering from discomfort from your braces or other orthodontic device, you are not alone. There are common orthodontic emergencies that occur throughout most patients’ treatments – but don’t fear! JT Orthodontics has the right solutions to help you ease the discomfort. Here are some common emergencies we see routinely at our office:
Loose Bands or Wires. These can poke and scratch the inside of the mouth.
Our solution for loose or poking wires and bands is to temporarily use a piece of wax and place it on the end of your poking wire. This will help protect the tongue and cheek from injury until we can see you in the office.
Pain or Discomfort. This could be due to shifting teeth or other issues.
While mild discomfort is normal, especially immediately after braces or orthodontic treatment is installed, you should never feel severe pain or unbearable discomfort. Even the initial discomfort should subside within a day or two. If you have pain, or pain that is sudden and accompanied by a fever, get in touch with our team immediately.
Lost Spacers or Appliances. This may affect the progress of your treatment.
If you lost a retainer or a part of your treatment, it is vital to get it replaced as soon as possible. Call our office so we can get a new one to you right away.
Injuries to the Mouth. Trauma to the mouth can damage braces or teeth.
We recommend that all dental patients wear mouthguards during any sport or activity where injury may occur. These guards will help protect against injury and also prevent damage to your braces or device. If an injury does happen, we recommend seeing Dr. Teng as soon as you can so we can evaluate any damage to your braces and provide repair. We also want to make sure to care for any open wounds in the mouth.
