Why Retainers Are a Must
Think of retainers as the unsung heroes of orthodontics. They play a vital role in maintaining the beautiful results you’ve achieved through braces. After your braces come off, your teeth can still shift over time. Retainers help to hold them in their new, corrected positions.
Types of Retainers
There are two main types of retainers:
- Removable Retainers: These are typically made of clear plastic or a combination of plastic and wire. They’re custom-made to fit your teeth and can be easily taken out for eating, brushing, and flossing.
- Fixed Retainers: These consist of a thin wire that is bonded to the back of your lower front teeth. They’re discreet and work 24/7 to keep your teeth in line.
Wearing Your Retainers: The Golden Rule
Consistency is key when it comes to retainers. I usually recommend wearing your retainers full-time for the first 6-12 months after braces, and then only at night indefinitely. However, I’ll provide you with personalized instructions based on your specific needs.
Caring for Your Retainers
- Keep Them Clean: Brush your removable retainers daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. You can also soak them in a denture cleaning solution periodically.
- Handle with Care: When you’re not wearing your retainers, store them safely in their case. Avoid wrapping them in napkins or tissues, as they can easily get thrown away accidentally.
- Don’t Expose Them to Heat: Keep your retainers away from hot water, dishwashers, and direct sunlight, as this can warp them.
Long-Term Oral Health
Even after braces and retainers, maintaining good oral hygiene habits and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings is crucial for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
